Barsane Ki Holi, celebrated in Mathura ’s Braj region, is world famous for Lathmar Holi in which women hit men by the lathi (cane) and men defend themselves by a shield. It lasts more than a week. Holi’s different names are- Basant Utsav and Dol Jatra (West Bengal), Phaguwa (Bihar), Dola (Odisha), Shigmo (Goa), Yaosang (Manipur), Baithaki Holi or Khadi Holi (Uttrakhand), Hola Mohalla (Punjab), Manjal Kuli (Kerala) and Rang Panchami or Shimga (Maharashtra).
People in big cities play Dahi-handi- a pot of buttermilk is hung high over the streets. It is very popular in Western India, especially in Maharashtra. Young boys try to reach at Handi (pot) and break it by making human pyramids.
